In ancient Greek there were two words for time: chronos and kairos. Chronos refers to chronological time and kairos refers to a special moment or period of significance. In mark 1:15 Jesus tells us that the time (kairos) of God has come which refers to his sacrifice that ushers in the Kingdom of God. Kairos is a moment or indeterminate period when something special happens—God acts.
Here in Thailand this past week I saw two such kairos moments. One of these kairos moments affects the Thai church. From a fragmented church the 100 Thai denominations have come together to initiate joint projects aimed at strengthening the church throughout the country and begin a new wave of outreach into this predominantly Buddhist community.
Into this movement of the church comes our Asia Learning Technologies ministry which started up a year ago. Dwight Martin, who is leading our LT work here, is an MK whose parents were instrumental in the planting of many churches in Thailand 50 years ago. Through relationships that began when he was a child, Dwight has been sucked into this movement of the church and is spearheading a project to bring resources to Thai church pastors. The timing of Dwight arrival and the growing unity among the Thai church is clearly part of a kairos moment in which the church will move beyond the foothold it has now in the country.
It is so great to see our God at work!
