During our two-month trip in 2012, the Igreja Batista do Dom Pedro, a church in the center of Manaus, graciously hosted us and made us feel not only welcome but truly blessed to be in Brazil. We plan to visit the church again and to bring along some donations of school supplies and books, generously provided by friends here in the United States, for children in a school the church has started in a shanty town on the outskirts of Manaus.
We’ll be staying with a wonderful missionary family we met during our trip last year, Brad and Melissa Miller, who have begun a ministry hosting short term missionaries to Manaus and leading short trips into the Amazon interior to minister to tribes-people in the villages. We haven’t had a chance to go into the interior yet, but have focused on getting to know the city of Manaus and learning more about the people, culture, and of course the language of Brazil! Hopefully in a future trip we’ll have a chance to extend our travels further down the Amazon.
When we return, it’s back to school for Bob and Emily. Bob will be continuing his studies in Information Science and Learning Technologies. Our ultimate goal is to work in Brazil, helping to set up distance education and training programs in seminaries and Bible schools in the Amazon. We’ve already seen a need for these programs in the area, during our trip last year, so we hope our trip this year will help us to continue to move toward these goals and prepare us further for long-term work in Manaus. Please pray that God will give us opportunities to connect with leaders in the seminaries and Bible schools in Manaus and that he will bless the work of the Igreja Batista as it ministers to the children who attend their school, which gives these kids a chance for a real future in life and for knowing Jesus, the only one who can give them true life.
